I want to thank the organizers of the meeting and ATWS for the opportunity to speak tonight. I've really enjoyed learning a little bit more about ATWS and all of your activities. Again, thank you for the opportunity to speak. I am going to move rather quickly tonight through a lot of information pertaining to HIV/AIDS in the developing world, particularly as it relates to children. As you will see, there is a stark contrast between the advances that have occurred in the care and treatment of HIV-infected children in the United States and the western world and what is happening for HIV-infected children in the developing world, who unfortunately continue to die at a completely unacceptable rate of a disease that has become largely manageable in the United States. However, I also want to focus on solutions tonight. I've titled the talk, "AIDS in Africa: On the Cusp of Hope" because I do think that with the extra resources that are now flowing through the African continent there is an opportunity to stem the tide of HIV and to run the corner on this epidemic in a very meaningful way.
